In the thirty years since Fairtrade products started appearing on our supermarket shelves we have come a long way.
With the advent of fair trade communities - started by Garstang in 2001 there was a great opportunity for us all to work together in small groups to bring Fairtrade to the fore in our local areas. Lancashire has been a Fairtrade county since 2015 and has joined over 2000 towns, cities and other communities around the world.
Fairtrade is a movement led by grassroots campaigners who have persuaded their friends and family, local authorities and businesses to embrace fair trade principles and source products with the Fairtrade mark. Those original three products from 1994 have grown to around 5,000.

We were delighted to learn that Lancashire County Council has recently committed to serve 100% Fairtrade coffee and tea at its outlets around the county including the cafe at Beaconfell. We know the impact of this and other decisions to choose Fairtrade will be felt by farmers and workers around the world.
